Read Chapter 1 of Holding Up the Sky

Remember being a little kid, standing at the edge of the sea? The summer sun beats down, seagulls are squawking overhead, and the damp sand is cool and gritty beneath your feet. You bite your lip as you watch the waves crash against the beach, churning up cream-coloured foam. As the tide recedes, you ever-so-carefully stick one toe into the water, waiting, heart hammering…and as the swell surges back towards you, you turn and bolt, squealing at the top of your lungs as you try to outrun the ocean nipping at your heels.

That’s kind of how I feel right now, as I publish a piece of my writing online for the first time. Excited—and full of giddy terror. But that’s what it’s all about, right? No one ever got anywhere by sticking to the dark anonymity of their bedroom.

And so, I introduce to you the first chapter of my YA contemporary novel Holding Up the Sky (read it here). If you have a few minutes, please check it out and let me know what you think. Feedback and advice are always welcome.

Happy reading!
