Top Ten Tuesday: Best book titles

Today’s topic for Top Ten Tuesday (hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl) is “Freebie”, where you get to make up your own topic, or else use a previous TTT topic you might have missed! YAY! I’ve decided to take this opportunity to reveal 10 of my all-time-favourite book titles (which I had to narrow down from a list of about 30 😧). I’d love to hear YOUR thoughts on my selections as well as your favourite titles!!

A COURT OF MIST AND FURY

by Sarah J. Maas

To be honest, I like a lot of Sarah J. Maas’ book titles, but A Court of Mist and Fury has to be my favourite. I’ve never been able to put my finger on why, exactly, I like it so much, but I think it’s something to do with the combination of “mist” and “fury”. It sounds a little spooky and a lot exhilarating, which is not a bad description for this book!

AUTOBOYOGRAPHY

I’m sure you’ll agree that Autoboyography is a very, very clever title for a boy, who is writing a book, which happens to be autobiographical in nature. Plus, I can never go past this book when speaking about favourites because just LOOK and that gorgeous cover and READ the awesomeness inside!

THE FIRE ETERNAL

I remember the very first time I saw this book. It was in 2008, in my school library, and I remember feeling like I’d just been punched in the gut. The Fire Eternal is such an EPIC title, and how can you ever go past a book with a dragon on the cover? This is the 4th book in Chris d’Lacey’s Last Dragon Chronicles—READ IT.

THE NAME OF THE WIND

A stunning, poetic title for a stunning, poetic book. The Name of the Wind (the title, that is) calls to mind all sorts of things, and it wasn’t until I was reading the book itself that I realised one of the key themes / plot lines is the MC Kvothe’s search for the “name” of the wind. So it’s perfect in a number of different ways!

 THE SHADOW OF WHAT WAS LOST

I’m not usually a massive fan of long book titles, but there’s something incredibly imaginative about The Shadow of What Was Lost. Same goes for the book itself! Its sequels, An Echo of Things to Come and The Light of All that Falls, have equally compelling titles, but this is Top TEN Tuesday not Top FIFTY Tuesday!!

THE STEEL REMAINS

Now, this might have been completely unintentional on the author’s part, but I ADORE the double meaning of this title. The Steel Remains can be interpreted as either a adjective/noun (i.e. remains that are made of steel) or a noun/verb (i.e. the steel endures) combo, both of which are  completely relevant to the story. Oh, how I love clever titles!

THE WRATH AND THE DAWN

I haven’t actually read this book, but I love the “ring” to the title. Though it is five words long, The Wrath and the Dawn also only has five syllables and I find it quite fun to say! I’m not exactly sure how (or even if) it’s particularly relevant to story, but whoever said you can’t just like the name of a title for the sake of it?!

THEY BOTH DIE AT THE END

Another one I haven’t yet read, so DON’T YOU DARE SPOIL IT FOR ME!! Part of the reason I enjoy the title They Both Die at the End so much is because of the mystery surrounding it. Does it spoil the ending? Is it purposely misleading? Do they REALLY both die at the end? I suppose I’ll have my answers when I read it, right? I can’t wait!

TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD

A classic? On my FAVOURITES list? I never thought I’d see the day! But you have to admit, To Kill a Mockingbird is a very catchy title and so far it’s withstood the test of time. There are so many ways in which the title is relevant to the story, from some of its key themes to that famous, famous quote. And it sounds exciting too!

WORDS OF RADIANCE

I haven’t read any of the Stormlight Archive books just yet, but Words of Radiance is a truly epic title. I love titles including words like…well…”words” or “songs” or things like that. From what I understand there is/was an organisation called the Knights Radiant in the world of this series, so I imagine the title has some significance too!
